Dreaming About Ham Sandwich after the End of World

“Imaginary of Ham Sandwich

In the realm of Old English, the word 'Ham' transcended its meaty origins and became a symbol of community and belonging—a village where hearts found their home. Bread, on the other hand, a seemingly humble necessity, has a history spanning thousands of years. The baking of bread is a craft that has been refined over time through repeated experimentation, and it embodies the importance of sustenance and life itself. Food processing has driven the development of human civilization. The modern sandwich inhibits the growth of bacteria, ensuring it remains fresh and controllable under specific conditions. The sandwich, a highly processed and convenient food, is a testament to that.

Within the realm of dreams, the ham sandwich emerges as a potent symbol. The artificial construction of a sandwich, with its bleached bread, forcefully binds together what was once an integrated village with nature - representing desires and hopes that bloomed amidst frustration, our longing for control and solace in the face of deterioration and unknown.

To claim our territories and establish a sense of home, boundaries are necessary. These territories required constant care and renewal, shaping our environments to meet our needs. Borders and control naturally emerge as a result of this process.

Yet, whether in the face of an apocalypse or any other circumstances, our longing for the ham sandwich endures—a testament to an unyielding desire woven into the very fibers of our being. And so, the saga continues, as we persistently yearn for fulfilment beyond.”

In this exhibition, I invite you to embark on a journey where the 'ham sandwich' serves as a metaphorical image—an ephemeral creation of our minds, existing solely within our desires and quest for control. I will investigate this process through the lens of materiality, delving into the ways in which humans employ enduring and robust materials like metal, plastic, and others to carve out domains of control within a given space.  Additionally, the materials I employ, such as expanding foam, possess their own unique logic and react to the surrounding environment. We shall delve into the intricate interplay between human will and the material world, where the use of these materials may give rise to conflicts or uncontrollable situations, yet we must courageously face the unknown consequences.

Furthermore, the blurred boundary between humans and nature represents an ongoing negotiation between two different entities. This negotiation is established and maintained through the materials humans use to build and create. My goal is to gain a deeper understanding of how the materiality of territorial production influences the relationship between humans and their environment, and how this relationship is constantly shifting and evolving.
